I covet the mornings I can take my time getting out of bed and take it easy all day. Isn’t it wonderful? It snowed in Dallas yesterday, which if you are from the south at all you will know what chaos it brings! Driving was pretty much not possible in any direction, so after my sweet husband finally arrived home, we fired up Netflix for a Friday night House of Cards marathon. Stating the obvious: this season is really good.
We maybe over did it on the snacking (we definitely did), so today is a semi-reset for me! I feel my absolute best on a whole foods plant based diet, but sometimes I like to indulge. This is also known as the 90/10 rule, or sometimes the 80/20 rule. I love it because it allows for flexibility and less guilt while you eat great 80-90% of the time.
The guilt is what ultimately traps us on our health journey, right? It starts with a little over indulgence, then you feel bad about it, and the next thing you know– you’re back at step one. Life is too short for the guilt my friends!
So back to this morning, I’m making a superfood smoothie to give my cells a rush of nutrients to use to boost my immune system. I will also complete a long, good-paced run to some awesome new music in a little while. See, you can have your occasional cake and eat it too. Enjoy life!
I want to share my favorite superfood smoothie with you, because it is unbelievably delicious! I promise you will enjoy it! Feel free to change it up with different fruits or leafy greens, per your preference:
Cacao Superfood Smoothie:
1 banana (ripe with brown spots helps fight cancer, healthy fat and potassium)
1 1/2-2 cups kale (high in calcium, fiber, iron, an anti-inflammatory and fights cancer!)
1 tablespoon cacao (highest antioxidant food on the planet! Great for your heart)
1-2 tablespoon goji berries (high in amino acids, antioxidants and B vitamins)
1 tablespoon maca powder (balances hormones, increases energy and libido)
3 tablespoons hemp seeds (high in protein, omega 3’s, iron and vitamin e)
1 1/2 cups coconut water (super hydration and delicious!)
optional: 1-2 medjool dates (adds sweetness to your smoothie, high in fiber, potassium and copper)
optional: 1 tablespoon almond butter (protein and healthy fat)
Directions: Blend everything and top with cacao nibs for some crunch! You can add 1/2 cup of water to thin it out if it’s too thick. Enjoy!
Also, I’m participating in a free 21-day vegan kickstart beginning tomorrow! Interested? Sign up here and let’s do this together! This program was developed by Neal Barnard, MD and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (pcrm.org). This kickstart is available in Chinese, Japanese, English and Spanish with awesome meal tips and daily inspirational emails to keep us going. It starts at the beginning of every month, so if you can’t start tomorrow, no worries! I encourage you all to try it out and see how your body feels afterwards. Remember, we are all bio-individuals and we each have different dietary needs. If you aren’t feeling good while trying the kickstart, try slowly adding animal proteins back in (organic, grass fed and lean meats) and experiment to see what works best for you. Most importantly: let the guilt go.
Have a wonderful weekend, wherever you may be!
Love & Light,
